Malaysian University To Study Jatropha For Medical Purposes
Added 265 days ago - Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will conduct a scientific study on the Jatropha tree to determine its suitablity for medical purposes, said Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Fadillah Yusof.
He said the tree had a high economic and commercial value, and was known for its potential as a source of biofuel to replace petroleum.
"Unimas will carry out a study to ascertain if other parts of the Jatropha tree have uses in the medical field," he told reporters after witnessing a memorandum of understanding involving Sebayor Holdings Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary company of Unimas, and Kelingkam Emas Sdn Bhd here Friday.
Fadilah said the ministry would give its support to Unimas, in terms of grants and technical assistance in carrying out the study which might take between five and 10 years, until a suitable medical product could be put in the market.
He said, besides the medical study, Unimas would also conduct studies on producing Jatropha tree-based beauty products, such as shampoo and soap.
